Muttukadu ChennaiSituated 36kms from Chennai, Muttukadu is an ideal backwater location to spend a lazy weekend. The backwaters of Muttukadu have been developed as a picturesque picnic spot and a center for water sports. The month of February draws the interest of worldwide water sports lovers; for the windsurfing regatta held every year here. Windsurfing, boating, kayaking, canoeing are a favorite with visitors here. TTDC (Tamilnadu tourism Development Corporation) has constructed a boathouse in Muttukadu. Boating and wind surfing are two major activities that are widely promoted here. TTDC takes care of the operations of the boathouse at Muttukadu. Prawn and jellyfish are very famous here. Training programs are held for youth, who are interested in windsurfing and other water sports activities. Muttukadu is well connected by buses from all points in the city. Located right on the East coast road, Muttukadu cannot be missed by any traveler traveling on the East coast road. Water Sports in Chennai : Chennai has a long sea shore - about 45 km starting from Royapuram in the north Chennai to Kovalam on the ECR (East Coast Road). Unfortunately due to the shifting continental shelves on the coastal line and the treacherous under water currents on many areas, Chennai doesn't sport as many water sports facilities as it should. With that preamble, we show here some promising water sports below: Water Surfing : 'Bay of Life' - A surf school located near Taj Vivanta Fisherman's Cove in Kovalam, about 32 km from Chennai city, offers training and equipment for Water surfing. Surfing classes start around ₹ 1500/ to around ₹13000/- for a week long course. It was started by an American Reece McGowen from California according to their website. Water Scooters : Tamil Nadu Tourist Development Corporation (TTDC) has a water sports facility in Mudaliarkuppam about 90 km from Chennai on the ECR. They offer Water Scooters, Rowing, Speed boating and Kayaking in the backwaters of Odiyur Lake on the periphery of Bay of Bengal sea. Kayaking : If you look for Kayaking as a sport, you could do that in Adyar backwaters just off Besant nagar and Kotturpuram. |
