Until a few years back Indian students preferred to go abroad for their post graduation alone but recent past has revealed lots of students showing interest to enroll in the undergraduate stream too. A variety of subjects and subject grouping offered by universities in UK play a major role in attracting many students to UK for their under graduation. Academic year commences from September or October every year and ends at June or July the subsequent year.

Institutions and degrees in the UK

Students can take up courses ranging from architecture, art and design, engineering and medical science to humanities, languages and social sciences. Degrees conferred are classified into two major types:

• Degrees conferred by universities themselves for all levels of education.
  
  
• Colleges or higher education institutes also known as university sector colleges, who mostly confer degree through the university and rarely by themselves.
  

Undergraduate courses for arts and science are held under the regular stream for a period of three years and at the end of the course students might have to submit a short thesis. Post graduation courses are either taught courses or courses that include individual research under able guidance. Taught courses are also known as 'degree by instruction' usually last for a period of one to two years and it takes three years to complete doctorate in any discipline.
